Yan Yean has been written off by everyone who doesn't live here. We've got forty-odd days to make that look very silly, and this weekend is where we start.

Here's the honest pitch. There's no training, no experience needed and no minimum. An hour helps. A whole weekend helps more. Turning up, eating a sausage and going home having met four neighbours also helps, because that's half the point of the thing.

Saturday 17 October

Doorknocking in pairs, in blocks of two hours, from mid-morning. First-timers go with someone who's done it before. You say hello, you ask what's annoying them about the area, and they tell you. That's the technique. There isn't a second part.

Afterwards we're at the Bridge Inn Hotel in Mernda for tea, a drink or a lemonade, whatever you're having. That bit is not optional in spirit, only in fact.

Sunday 18 October

Laurimar Community Activity Centre, midday to 4pm. BBQ lunch. No speeches.

In the afternoon we're filming campaign content at the centre, and some of it is deliberately ridiculous. If you've acted, filmed, edited, done sound, or you're simply willing to make a goose of yourself on camera, come and be in it. Gear is provided and nobody's judging.

If you'd rather knock a few doors on Sunday morning first and then eat, even better. Just tell us when you sign up.

What to bring

Comfortable shoes, a hat, a water bottle. That's the list.

Kids

Welcome at the Sunday lunch, and there'll be other kids there. Doorknocking is easier without them, but plenty of people bring a pram and it works fine.
