I have three kids under six. Two girls and a boy, all with braid-able hair, and I have exactly one hairstyle in my repertoire. It is a ponytail and it is crooked.

Father's Day is on 6 September, so I've booked a room the weekend before and I'm learning properly. Figured I shouldn't do it alone.

Come along on Sunday 30 August and let's have a go together. We'll have someone there who actually knows what they're doing, so you won't be left guessing.

One thing to know before you RSVP: we're braiding real hair, so you'll need to bring someone to practise on. A kid, a niece or nephew, a grandkid, or a very patient mate. If you'd love to come but haven't got anyone handy, put it in the RSVP and we'll sort you out with someone to partner up with on the day.

There will be snacks. There will be some genuinely terrible first attempts. There will be kids laughing at their dads, which is the real point of the afternoon.

We're in Mernda but everyone's welcome, wherever you are in Yan Yean or beyond. Doreen, Whittlesea, Donnybrook, Wollert, Wandong, all of it.

I'm running for Yan Yean at the state election in November, and I'll be there the whole two hours. If you want to talk about what's going on around here, the roads, the schools, the cost of everything, I'd love to hear it. If you'd rather just braid and eat and not talk politics at all, that's completely fine. Most people come for the second thing and that suits me.
